At age ten DeDe was intrigued with how Nikki Giovanni expressed herself. At age twelve she was introduced to the work of Ntozake Shange. After reading For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide, Dede realized she could take a poem and make it her own. DeDe was later introduced to the work of Maya Angelou. In 2001 she began performing her poetry. Quiet Storm's work examines the joys and pains of being a black woman. Her controversial video Who is Sara Baartman? Received over 3,000 views it's first week on Youtube.
